Catfish

Catfish are the leading freshwater aqua crop in the United States.  The value of these fish has increased annually for two decades.  there is 165,000 acres of catfish being raised in the U.S.  There have been over 50 kinds of catfish found.  The most common to us is the channel cat.  These fish can reach up to 60 lbs.  You can eat almost 60% of there weight.
Whiskers on a catfish are what we call Barbals which are used as feelers in the water.  The water temperature best for these fish is 75 to 80 degrees.  The P.H. should be around 6.3 to 7.5.
When mating the female will layer eggs on the pond flour, then the male will swim up to the eggs and deposit sperm on the eggs.  The females can lay up to 2000 eggs per lb of fish.  The catfish when they are smaller they would need about 49% protein every few hours and then after that 35% on the average.
